WWII - Herald and Review Library; Cater, Carl Eugene, 12/22/1942. Released official Navy photograph. Article on the back of the photo: "Carl Eugene Cater, 19, son of Mrs. Ruby Mentz of Shelbyville, has been graduated from recruit training at Great Lakes naval station as honor man of his company, and has been selected to attend one of the navy's service schools. he graduated from Shelbyville high school in 1941, where he played trumpet in the school band, and was a clothing salesman at Terre Haute when he enlisted Nov. 2 as an apprentice seaman."
