Description

Photograph of Adolph A. Sigfried; (died 1/26/1935). Veteran actor of International reputation, whose home was in Decatur. He established the first vaudeville theater in Decatur. In 1903 he opened his theater in the 300 Block N. Water and in 1909 a new theater was erected. Later he opened a second house next door, known as the Nickel Bijou. He ran the two for 12 years. In 1913 he took over the Empress, which he ran for a year and a half, selling out his lease then to the Orpheum Circuit. He retired from active business here in 1928 with the sale of the Bijou theater to the Great States Theaters chain. He ws once known on Broadway as "The Man with a Hundred Faces". Many famous comedians and vaudeville actors were given assistance and bookings by Sigfried. Among them were, Dixie Harris, Al Jolson, Frank Tinney and Sophie Tucker. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, and a member of Ansar Shrine and Decatur B.P.O.E. Elks. Photo by International Stereograph Co. of Decatur. Ran in the Herald Dec 11, 1928.
