WWII - Herald and Review Library; Conroy, Samuel E., 12/20/1944 and 1/22/1945. Articles on back of photo: "Samuel E. Conroy, son of Mr. & Mrs. J. H. Conroy, 1185 W. Forest Ave,., receives the Distinguished Flying Cross from Lt. Col. Howard C. Stelling at Blythville, Ark., army air field. The award was made for 'extraordinary achievement while serving as a waist gunner on 25 bombing missions over enemy occupied Europe.' Conroy entered service in November 1942, and received his gunners wings at Fort Myers, Fla., in March 1943. He went to England as a member of a Flying Fortress crew, and although wounded by flak on his third mission, took part in some of the most difficult missions of the war. He holds the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf clusters and the Purple Heart. He is now in training at Blytheville while waiting assignment to flight training. His wife the former Velma Hefner of LaCrosse, Ind. 12/20/1944." "Samuel E. Conroy, son of Mr. and Mrs. James H. Conroy of 1185 West Forest Ave., was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in recognition of his achievement while serving as waist gunner on 25 bombing missions over enemy occupied Europe as member of a B-17 crew. The award was made Dec 8, by Lt. Col. Howard C. Stelling in a brief ceremony at the army air field, Blytheville, Ark. Holder of the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters and the Purple Heart. Conroy now is receiving air cadet training at the army air field in San Antonio, Texas. 1/22/1945"
