Herald and Review Library: McGrath, Commander Thomas D., Article on back of photo; "Commander Thomas D. McGrath, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. McGrath, 1770 North Water street, received the Silver Star medal from Capt. George L. Menocal, fleet administrative officer at Boston, for meritorious service as commander of a rugged destroyer which has returned to duty after being repaired. the destroyer's stern was ripped away by a German E-boat in the Normandy invasion last June. Commander McGrath, a graduate of Decatur high school, completed training at the Annapolis naval academy in 1935."
