Herald and Review Library: Livingston, Leo Steward Second Class; Article on back of photo; "'Life aboard a transport ship is so active that there isn't much time for reflective thinking.' Leo Livingston, Negro steward second class, home from one year's duty overseas, reflected yesterday. 'I leave all thinking to my superior officers and just listen to orders.' Steward Livingston, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Livingston, 558 South Jackson street, wears the ribbons denoting service in the three war theaters, the Asiatic, Southwest Pacific and Mediterranean. 'we brought back German, Italian and Jap prisoners,' he said, 'and the Italians were the best bunch of prisoners I have ever seen.' Aussie Girls are Passengers; Steward Livingston's ship was the first ship to bring Jap prisoners back to the United States. 'Our commander, E. M. Doar, is a swell guy and all the fellows think he is tops,' he said. 'Along with other passengers on our ship were many wives of servicemen, a number of them Australian girls. the Australians, who are extremely friendly with us, have introduced American customs into their way of living. Many of them seem just like Decatur folks,' he said. 'Australian girls seem to like American humor as well as hamburgers and jitterbugging-and some of them are darn good jitterbugs too.' Boxing Main Sport; Entering service in September of 1941, the steward received training at Corpus Christie, Texas, Kingsville, Texas and Atlanta, Ga. He attended Decatur schools and was a member of the high school track and football teams in 1937-38. A sports enthusiast, he said 'About the only sports we can get in on board ship or at any of our ports is boxing. Besides, it's much too hot to play baseball in New Zealand or New guinea, two of the hottest spots in the world.' Steward Livingston who arrived home July 20, will report to San Francisco for his next assignment. 'Iv'e been half-way around the world and I'll probably see the other half soon-and I'll be back too,' he said grinning broadly.
