Description
Herald and Review Library: Lewey, Lt. Creighton M.; Article on back of photo; "this is the impression that First Lt. Creighton M. Lewey, 1064 West Macon street, brought back to Decatur after serving in the aircraft warning service in Iceland for 21 months. the younger natives are interested in the States and would like to come her, but the older generation is, in t he main, pro-Nazi, he reported. 'There wasn't too much excitement in Iceland when they received their independence from Denmark last summer. This was surprising because the Icelanders are extremely nationalistic, and some ever refer to the U. S. troops as 'the garrison!' Sveinn Bjornsson, who had served as regent under Denmark's rule, became the president.' Lieutenant Lewey played in several operettas and plays during his school career here. He completed three years as a speech and romance language major at Millikin university before entering the A.A.F. in July 1942. He is home on a 45-day furlough."
