Description
These lions were purchased by Dr. J.T.B. Stapp and placed in front of his home at 252 N. Franklin St. in the early 1880's. This house was later purchased by I.A. Harkrader. The lions stood at that address until Mrs. Rollo C. Persinger, who last occupied the Stapp house as a pricate residence after inheriting it from her parents, the I.A. Harkrader's, moved them to her home in the southwest corner of W. Prairie and Monroe streets. Upon selling this home to the Luther Wallbridges, she moved the lions out to her country home north of Decatur near Maroa. In 1955 the lions were still at this farm. These lions cause considerable controversy. Some persons believed that they were great works of art probably imported from Italy at great cost. Others contended that the lions were picked up for practically nothing in Chicago. The house was identified for many years as "the house with the lions".
