Photograph of A. E. Staley, Mfg. Co. This is a view of the east and industrial section of Decatur in 1912. This photo was published in the Review December 1, 1912 and was taken by George Baker of Decatur. The cutline with the photo when it ran read as follows: "Seven big factories pay out a total of somethings like $3,000,000 yearly. This view shows the American Hominy Co.'s east Decatur plant, the Starch works, and at one side the edge of the Bridge Co's property. 'The Wabash shops are just across the tracks from the Starch Works." The mill at the far left was one of the original Pratt Cereal Co. (which later became Staley's) mills. In 1902 it was bought by American Hominy co. In 1919 Staley bought this mill and it was used for storage until 1921 when it became the first of the Staley soy bean processing plants. After years of remodeling and expansion at the Staley Mfg. Co., none of the original buildings remain according to Ruth Cade of Staley's 2/24/1955. (Information from clips and Decatur and Macon Co.
