Stapp's Row. This engraving is the only view obtainable of the row of five store buildings built by Dr. James Stapp and E. O. Smith in South Park street probable in the early 1860's, and known as Stapp's Row. The card from which this cut was made is labeled "W. C. Fairthorne, Engraver, New Square." The "new square" may refer to Central Park as Lincoln Square was known as "old square." Dr. Stapp has been referred to as Decatur's first real capitalist. He came here in 1855 bring $20,000. He invested and made money. After he was converted he gave several thousands of dollars toward the construction of a new Franklin Street Methodist Church. The New church became known as Stapp's Chapel at Franklin and Eldorado, later the Grace Methodist Church. Stapp's row was the best and handsomest row of buildings in Decatur at the time it was erected. Dr. Stapp died in 1882. Photo ran 12/4/1935.
