Photograph of William Kenney Whitfield; (died 1/19/1940). Former Macon County Circuit Judge and one of the founders of the former Standard Life Insurance Co. He came to Decatur in 1911 from Sullivan, where he was sate's attorney for Moultrie County and a prominent attorney. When he came to Decatur, he formed a law partnership with Jesse L. Deck and Thomas B. Jack, which was dissolved in 1914 when Whitfield was appointed by Gov. E. F. Dunne to fill the vacancy on the Macon County circuit bench created by the death of Judge W. C. Johns. The following year he was elected to the office and filled the six-year term. Upon his retirement from the bench he joined Jesse L. Deck and W. T. Coleman in a law partnership. He left Decatur in 1922 when the Standard Life Insurance Co., of which he was president and general manager, moved to St. Louis. In 1925, he became president of the International Life Insurance Co. of Missouri, which had merged with Standard Life. In 1928, after the sale of his interest in the insurance firm, he moved to Orlando, Fla. and again entered law practice. He served as grand master at arms of the Knights of Pythias of Illinois while living in Sullivan, and later was elected grand chancellor. He was a graduate of the University of Michigan and was admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1895. Photo ran July 9, 1911.
