Photograph of Rev. Joseph W. Van Cleve; (died 6/29/1926). Former pastor of the Grace Methodist church in Decatur. He was a member of the board of control of the Epworth League after 1896. He came to Decatur in 1903, and during pastorate here the building on N. Main St. was erected. In 1908 he went to Champaign. In 1912 he was made district superintendent, with headquarters in Decatur. In 1912 he was a delegate to the general conference in Minneapolis and was prominently mentioned as a candidate for resident bishop. In 1914 he delivered an address at the National Methodist convention in Washington, D.C. and also delivered an address at the San Francisco exposition in 1914. In 1916 he was made general financial secretary of the Methodist church in Illinois. He was a prominent Mason and in 1904 he was made grand chaplain of the Illinois grand lodge, A.F. & A. M. He was president of the local Ministerial ass'n. and also of the Illinois Inter-church Federation at one time.
