Photograph of George S. Simpson; (died 4/14/1923). Pioneer of Decatur and Macon County. He helped to build the political wigwam in in State Street in which Abraham Lincoln spoke during his presidential campaign. He served as alderman from the Third Ward for six years and he advocated a system of water works for Decatur. He was the first householder to put in city water and the city's first fountain was placed in his front yard. His home was at 357 W. Main St. and was torn down in 1951 to make room for the Ohio Oil Co. station. He was also instrumental in securing the gas plant and a rolling mill for Decatur. He was a salesman for the firm of Haworth & Son Manufacturers of farm implements and machinery. Photo by VanDeventer Studio, ran in the Herald and Review 11/3/1912.
