Description
Photograph of Mrs. Florence E. McConnell (born 7/6/1867; died 8/19/1945). Prominent Decatur civic leader. 1929-1937 executive secretary Decatur Community Chest. Helped organize Decatur YWCA, Girl's Welfare Home, and Traveler's Protective Assn. First president Decatur Woman's Club; active in women's suffrage actives in Central Illinois; in charge of Home Improvement Assn. in the extension department of U. of I. for 12 years. Member Decatur Business and Professional Women's Club, First Presbyterian church. Came to Decatur in 1889. Daughter of Confederate soldier, Lewis W. Shores. Left Decatur in 1937 to organize Community Chest in Evansville, Ind. Photo was used in the Decatur Review, Mar. 16, 1930.
