WWII - Herald and Review Library; Elben, John W., 10/4/1944. Article on back of photo: "Fifteenth Army Air force in Italy, Oct 4 (Special) - Staff Sgt. John W. Elben, 19, Shelbyville, aerial gunner of a B-17, recently flew his 50th long-range mission in the Mediterranean theater. He began flying combat May 13 of this year, with an attack on the railroad yards at Trento, Italy. His last mission was Sept. 13, to bomb the oil refineries in Blechhammer, Germany. He wears the Air Medal with five oak leaf clusters. Before entering the army April 21, 1943, he was employed as a farmer. he is the son of Harry Elben, Shelbyville."
