Description
WWII - Herald and Review Library; Dean, Lt. Harris, 8/26/1944. Article on back of photo: "Lt. Harris Dean, home from 21 months duty on board one of the Navy's new battleships assigned to Task Force 58, recently participated in t he struggle for Saipan. His ship, one of the most powerful of our fleet, equipped with 16-inch guns which have so successfully blasted the Japs on the Pacific Islands, has come through nine major battles without being hit or damaged by enemy fire. 'Our duty is to support and protect the carries and to support lands on enemy territory by making pre-invasion bombardments to soften things up," the lieutenant said. Serving as assistant air defense officer, he has taken part in the bombardment of the Gilbert Islands, the invasion and occupation of th eMarshall islands and supported the landings on Dutch New Guinea. Big gun Effective. "the longest bombardment in which I participated was during the softening-up job on Nemur island. Our ship was sent in ahead of the rest of the fleet and for 36 solid hours we shelled the island. I'm just a guy from the Middle West and I still am not used to the noise those 16-inch guns make."
