Herald and Review Library: Smith, S/Sgt. Earl; Article on back of photo; "By Maxine J. Kyle, of the Herald Staff; It was the night before a big mission for the well-known, but often misspelled, American division. Staff Sgt. Earl Smith was in his tent, on Philippine soil, thinking about tomorrow's job when someone yelled: 'Front and center, Smith.' Platoon leader for the rifle company, smith though they wanted something about his ammunition report. His commanding officer broke the good news, 'You drew rotation furlough. You're going home.'"
